India has a very rich tradition of classical and non-classical dance. In India Natyashastra is the most elaborate of all treatises on acting and dramatic criticism ever written in any language by sage Bharata. It is the oldest surviving text on stagecraft in the world compiled in 2000 BC. For many centuries the dancers were attached to the temples.  This maintained a strong religious aroma to dance.

The folklore museum has the best traditional theatres in India, “Kanjadalam  & Kalithattu “. The traditional theatre, Kanjadalam means Lotus Petals in Sanskrit, have 333 columns with gods and goddesses depicting 333 million gods of Hindy mythology. The theatres have 253 mural paintings on wood detailing about the traditional art forms of Kerala. The four walls of the theatre are originally a 19th century wooden house which reminds the feudal system and the ethnic high quality carpentry work of Kerala. Performance in this theatre helps to give an unforgettable stage experience. Kanjadalam is the venue for classical art forms like Kathakali, Mohiniyattom, Bharathanatyam, Koodiyattom, Koothu , and martial art forms like Kalaripayattu.

Natural caned plantain chairs are furnished for comfortable seating. The theatre have Special lighting & Sound system, Concealed Air-conditioning, Teak wood floors having a seating capacity for 100 pax. The traditional theatre ‘Kalithattu’ on the first floor is for ritual and folklore art forms. ‘Kalithattu’ Theatre is in the midst of the largest antique costume collection in India. The hand carved wood works, early 15th century Dwarapalakas, the Rare Mask collection around the natural grass matt seating on the teakwood floors along with special lighting & sound effects gives the true traditional ambience to the viewers. Kalithattu is the venue for the ritual art forms like Theyyam, Poothan thira, Mudiyettu, Darikan Kali etc. and Folklore art forms like Thiruvathirakali, Margam kali, Chavittu natakam , Oppana, String puppet, Shadow puppet , Pavakathakali etc.

All the above mentioned art forms are Performed by professional artists.

Authentic stage performances are conducting every day by 6.30 pm . A combination of four performances are staging in Kanjadalam theatre which include Kathakali, Bharathanatyam, Mohiniyattam & Kalaripayattu.

Duration 1hr 15 minutes. The facial make-up and costume dressing starts at 5.30 pm. The guests are advised to reach the museum one hour before the show, so that, it may possible to experience the whole traditional art museum and the exotic, centuries old culture and heritage of ethnic  Kerala .
