Kalaripayattu the martial art form of Kerala is regarded as the oldest and more scientific in the world. Dates back to more than 3000 years, Kalaripayattu is considered as the mother of all martial art forms in the world. The earliest record of defense mechanism is said to be in Dhanurveda which is one of the four Upavedas. Dhanurveda is an upaveda of Yajurveda. Dhanurveda mentions many of the weapons employed by the Kalaripayattu practitioner. The weapons used in Kalaripayattu are sword, Dagger, Shield, short sticks, spears etc are similar to the seven types of fighting as per Dhanurveda like Archery, Discus, Spear, Sword and Shield, Dagger, Club and Empty-handed.

Legend traces the 3000-year-old art form to Sage Parasurama- the master of all martial art forms and credited to be the re-claimer of Kerala from the Arabian Sea. At the turn of the 6th century A.D. Kalaripayttu spread from Southern India to China by Daruma Bodhidarma - an Indian Buddhist monk and Kalaripayattu master. From China, martial arts have spread to Korea & Japan.

Kalaripayattu is derived from the words Kalari - which means "place, threshing floor, or battlefield", and payattu - which means to "exercise in arms or practice". Teaching Kalaripayttu follows Gurukkal system which consists of rigorous physical training besides training in self-discipline tempered through devoted discipline & intense meditation. The co-ordination of the body and mind is given maximum importance in this art. The main aim of this martial art form is the complete co-ordination of the mind and the body. The traditional training of kalaripayattu includes specialized medicinal preparations & methods of treatment, which helps to attain greater energy for the body.
